“And what's a ‘promo’?” I asked in my first post-college interview for a PA role in the MTV promos department. My future boss looked annoyed, as she had been using the word “promo” for over 20 minutes and seeing me nod like I understood. “We’ll get back to you", she politely responded, as she walked me to the elevator. I figured I blew it, yet somehow, two weeks later, I got the call! The hours were rough, but the perks were aplenty, with one of the greatest ones happening right off the bat when I seat-filled at the 1996 Video Music Awards and witnessed the reunion of my favorite band growing up, Van Halen. My dream job continued for the next 12 plus years as I developed a career as an on-air promo producer/director (yes, I eventually figured out what it meant). One that introduced me to so many talented people that I’m so thankful to have worked with.
